Premonition

NZPA-AFP Houston

The husband of an American astronaut who was originally chosen to join the ill-fated flight by Challenger had "an astute premonition” of disaster. “I’m glad you’re not in this flight,” an airline pilot, George Fulford, told his wife Millie on Tuesday. Mrs Hughes-Fulford, aged 39, had been named as one of the crew in 1984, before a change in

the shuttle programme. . “She called me when it happened,” Mr Fulford said. "She just asked me if I was watching (the telecast showing the explosion). We didn’t say anything else.” In spite of the disaster, Mrs Hughes-Fulford is continuing her training at the Houston Space Centre. “We’ve discussed it many times,” her husband said. “She considers it part of the gamble and it doesn’t worry her a bit.”
