Wool prices ease at sale

Wool prices eased yesterday at the Invercargill auction, held in Christchurch, under the influence of a stronger New Zealand dollar. The official report showed prices for most fleece descriptions falling, when compared with the Napier sale on January 23. Better style medium crossbred, at 35 micron, was down 2.5 per cent with the poorer style in buyers’ favour; better style strong crossbred, 37 micron, was down 4.5 per cent with the poorer style par to minus 2.5 per cent; crossbred cotts were firm; second shear was par to minus 2.5 per cent, lambs were down 2.5 to 5 per cent, the skirtings were in buyers’ favour and the oddments were fully minus

2.5 per cent. The competition was well spread with a strong bidding tone. The principal buyers were eastern Europe supported by western Europe, local mills and the Far East.

The Wool Board gave limited support to the market by bidding on 2370 bales, 11.6 per cent, and having 910 bales, 4.5 per cent sold or passed to it.

The market indicator for the sale was 459 clean and 341 greasy. The following is the official range of clean prices issued by the Invercargill Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Council of Wool Exporters.
