Champagne sales up
NZPA-AP Paris Champagne sales worldwide last year totalled 195.4 million bottles, up 3.9 per cent from the record of 188 million bottles set in 1984, says the Champagne Producers’ Association. Its figures showed the French drank less bubbly than in 1984, but still more than the rest of the world combined.
The British regained their No. 1 position as the leading export market, with a 29 per cent increase from 11.9 million bottles in 1984 to 15.4 million last year. Exports over all rose 16 per cent last year to 72.8 million bottles. Domestic sales dropped 2.1 per cent to 122.6 million bottles. The United States
slipped back into second position, its imports rising only 11 per cent to 14.2 million bottles from 12.8 million bottles in 1984.
West Germany was the third-best market for champagne. The rest of the top 10, in descending order, were Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Denmark.
