Lab. workers will reveal action plan tomorrow
Medical laboratory technologists do highly skilled and technical tasks, and should be rewarded appropriately, the Minister of Health, Dr Bassett said last week. “However, their planned industrial action could have serious implications on the hospital system. It is hoped that patients’ interests come first,” he said. A spokesman for Dr Bassett said yesterday that those comments were still appropriate.
They referred to national industrial action by laboratory technologists scheduled to begin on February 7. The action is a bid for wages higher than those offered by the Health Services Personnel Commission. “The Press” has so far been unable to get any comment on the dispute from the commission.
The planned industrial action would probably disrupt normal hospital services, including delaying routine surgery, the Insti-
tute of Medical Laboratory Technology said this week.
It plans to release details of the industrial action tomorrow.
Dr Bassett has said negotiations would resume when the laboratory workers withdrew their threat of industrial action.
“I am hopeful that with common sense on both sides there can be a speedy return to negotiations,” he said.
