Staff will vote on return to work call
PA Auckland Air New Zealand kitchen staff will meet tomorrow to consider the airline’s request that they resume work pending an Arbitration Court hearing. international flights from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch will, meanwhile, continue leaving without food or liquor.
Several workers were suspended on Saturday for following a union ban on cutlery and crockery for in-flight meals. Others in the three centres walked off the job.
The members of the Hotel Workers’ Union want wage parity with ground stewards who load and unload provisions and wash utensils.
The Auckland union secretary, Mr Rick Barker, said members would vote tomorrow. He felt it was “an outrageous cheek” for the airline to be requesting a return to work when it had suspended some workers and "effectively locked out” others. An Air New Zealand spokesman, Mr Vern Mitchell, said the airline offered a return to work for all workers provided they resumed normal duties.
