Petrol price rise possible
PA Wellington The Government’s Marsden Point refinery petrol levy may soon rise 4c a litre, said the Minister of Finance,, Mr Douglas, yesterday. The Cabinet would consider the rise soon “in order to meet the lunatic commitment of the previous Government to this massively expensive drain on the motorist,” he said. However, a spokesman for Mr Douglas’s office said that while any increase in the levy would be passed on to consumers, it would not necessarily mean a 4c rise in the price of petrol. The exchange rate and international oil prices also affected the’ cost to New Zealand motorists. World oil prices were
depressed, but any falls in domestic petrol prices would be tempered by the possible rise in the refinery levy. . '
The decision would probably be made within the next few weeks, said the spokesman.
