All missions suspended

Plans for future space shuttle flights have been suspended while investigators probe the cause of yesterday’s disaster. A spokesman for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration centre at Cape Canaveral, told “The Press” last evening that a launch planned for March 6 was likely to be cancelled and further missions were suspended until the cause of the crash was known. It was not known how long the investigation would take.

Any decision to halt the

shuttle programme would be made at the White House and ’not by N.A.S.A., the spokesman said.

In a television address yesterday, President Reagan pledged that the United States would continue its space exploration.

The N.A.S.A. spokesman said that investigators were not speculating on causes of the explosion and information from monitoring devices and television cameras was still being collected.
