Mawhinney hits maiden century
PA Wellington Wellington’s Paul Allott and Northern Districts’ Russell Mawhinney dominated the Shell Trophy cricket match at the Basin Reserve yesterday.
Sent in to bat after two hours were lost because of rain, Northern ended the day on 208 for eight, with the opener, Mawhinney, having recorded his maiden firstclass century. His battle against the fast bowler, Allott, was the highlight of the day, for Mawhinney was beaten time after time by the Englishman.
Allott ended with five for 37 from 25 overs — his second haul of five wickets against Northern. Earlier this month, he took five for 56 in Northern’s second innings against Wellington at Gisborne.
Allott was so frustrated at Mawhinney’s inability to middle the ball that he called for six slips fieldsmen in the period before tea. Mawhinney was dropped at third slip by Grant Cederwall when 16 and
never got on top of the attack. While showing a totally unflappable attitude and determination to stay put, Mawhinney must receive full credit for scoring 110, but it wasn’t a pretty sight watching him gather the runs.
