Briasco scores century
PA Dunedin Scott Briasco scored the third century of his firstclass career, and most other batsmen gorged themselves on runs during the first day of the Shell Trophy cricket match between Otago and Central Districts at Centennial Park, Oamaru, yesterday.
Central districts declared at 344 for five after batting for 379 minutes and 122.4 overs, and Otago made a bold response, reaching 42 without loss in the last 30 minutes.
Warren Lees, the Otago captain, sent Central into bat on winning the toss, but the batsmen were sei-
dom in difficulties on a pitch which was loaded in their favour. Central’s innings was based on two major partnerships. Briasco and Tony Blain added 136 for the second wicket in 156 minutes, and lan Smith and Derek Stirling put on 125 for the fifth wicket in 90 minutes of belligerent batting.
