Placid Victor in good order
Special correspondent Auckland
Placid Victor is in grand shape for his eagerly awaited clash with Roydon Glen on the opening night of the Auckland Trotting Cup meeting at Alexandra Park tomorrow.
After New Zealand’s top four-year-old pacer had been restricted to jogging and cantering at Pukekohe yesterday, his trainer, Sandy Purdon, said that he was very pleased with the horse’s condition. Placid Victor broke the Cambridge record for 2600 m from a standing start when he went 3min 20.6 s in winning the Tudor Hanover Stakes last Friday. Purdon said he would not give him any
hoppled work between that race and the Chardon Handicap tomorrow.
“He doesn’t need it I’ll keep him to jogging and cantering.” Frederick, the 'other top-class four-year-old in Purdon’s stable, will not compete at the Cup meeting. There is nothing wrong with him, as he showed in a brisk hoppled run yesterday. It is just that there are no mobile-start races for him. He will have his next race in the Cambridge Classic on February 14. The race is restricted to four-year-olds. Driven by Stephen Reid, Frederick went 2400 m yesterday in 3min 19.2, the last 800 m in a hectic Imin 0.25. He worked early when conditions were comparatively
calm but it was still a smart run.
Later in the morning, when a strong wind was blowing down the home straight, Te Awa attracted attention when he came the last 800 m of his work in Imin 2.15. He went 2400 m in 3min 21s. Te Awa must have a good chance in the Lion New Zealand Handicap at Alexandra Park. The fine trotter Mairo Sultan led the pacer Cleao Boy throughout 3200 m in 4min 44.85, the last 800 m in Imin 6.45. Mairo Sultan has been unlucky enough to draw the extreme outside of the front row in the Air Pacific Mobile Trot tomorrow, but it will be surprising if he does not give a good account of himself.
Dreaming Minbar was
slightly ahead of Twin Cam and United Blue Chip at the end of 2400 m in 3min 33.55. Easily the fastest section was the last 800 m in Imin 3.25.
Bebe Valiente was travelling strongly at the end of 3200 m in 4min 49.25, the last 800 m in Imin 4.4 s and 400 m in 30s.
Doctor Schell surprisingly beat the more tightly assessed Amber’s Mystery over 3200 m, the last 800 m in Imin 5.35.
Kivander Banner was too good for Perfect Count over 3200 m in 4min 45.65. The last 400 m was cut out fast in 30.15. Kivander Banner is sure to be well supported in the Impact Windows Handicap at Alexandra Park.
