Church founder dies
NZPA-AP Los Angeles L. Ron Hubbard, the science fiction writer who founded the controversial Church of Scientology 30 years ago, has died. He was 74. Mr Hubbard, who had not been seen in public since 1980, died on Saturday of a stroke at his ranch near San Luis Obispo, 240 km north-west of central Los Angeles. His ashes were scattered at sea, said Earle Cooley, the church’s chief counsel. He had left most of his estate to Scientology. Mr Hubbard and his third and surviving wife, Mary Sue Hubbard, founded the church in 1954.
