Coaster noise ‘acceptable’

Queen Elizabeth II Park’s roller-coaster meets the Christchurch City Council’s noise level standards. The roller-coaster has caused nearby residents to complain and is the subject of a 90-signature petition to the council. The petition objects to the coaster’s noise and alleges that the steel wheels, screaming patrons and running hours make it a serious disturbance. However, noise tests in December and this month showed the coaster did not exceed acceptable

levels. One other complaint has also been received by the council. The coaster’s owner, Mr Bill Finnerty, has agreed to consider using nylon coaster wheels to reduce noise and to stop at dusk, about 9.15 p.m. He has also said that at the end of this summer, a new passenger vehicle

will be designed with attention to noise. The coaster’s frame has already been modified. Other than the complaints, the council also received a letter from the North New Brighton Community Council, which had canvassed neighbours of the park. They said they could not understand why complaints had been

made or why the petition had received support Cr David Close told yesterday’s community services and health committee that he had visited the coaster yesterday and it did “make a noise. More so than I had expected.”

Further sound measurements will be taken when the modifications have been made.
