Council sells abattoir

The Timaru City Council has sold Its abattoir to Abco Meats, of Oamaru, for $1 million. The council has been looking for a buyer for the 80-year-old abattoir in Pacific Street for nearly 12 months, since the plant was considered to be of little benefit to ratepayers. The delicensing of the meat industry four years ago made it difficult for the council to compete in an unprotected commercial scene.

The manager of Abco Meats, Mr Alan Wilson, said his firm was looking for additional killing space to cater for its wholesale business, and was delighted to buy the Timaru abattoir. "It was one of two options we had. The first was to get Increased killing space and access to pig killing space which we don’t have in Oamaru; and the other alternative was to extend our operation in Oamaru, but this would have cost too much.”

The sale was strongly objected to by Cr R. G. Blackham at a meeting of the Timaru City Council on Monday evening. He said the council was making a mistake in selling any land on the Dashing Rocks peninsula. The land was part of Timaru’s seascape and had the potential to become a beautiful reserve.
