Police get lead on bank robber
PA Auckland Auckland detectives have a new lead in their search for a man who robbed a Torbay bank of $13,500 more than a month ago. Belated Information from witnesses to the December 20 hold-up has given the police a precise description of the robber, and has led to extensive checks for grey motorcycle helmets with Yamaha written across the back. Detective Ray Van Beynen, of the Takapuna C. 1.8., said the man wore the light-grey,
helmet with no visor. It was possibly a FFM or MACH 1 make. Such helmets were common several years ago, but not many were about now, he said. The police believe the suspect, in his early 20s and about 1.7 m to 1.73 m tall, might have committed similar bank robberies at Forrest Hill and Glenfield in late 1984 and early last year. “He was so calm and in control it makes me think he has done it before,” said Detective Van Beyneh.
