Obituary Mr J. W. Holman
PA Wellington Mr John Warren Holman, who was awarded a George Medal for his heroic rescue of fellow passengers in the 1953 Tangiwai rail disaster, has died. He was 61. Mr Holman, of Plimmerton, and his wife were in the last carriage of the packed Aucklandbound express on Christmas Eve, 1953, when it was swept away by floods at the Tangiwai bridge near Waiouru, killing 151
people. He helped 21 passengers out of the carriage. Mr Holman was born in England and served with the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. He arrived in New Zealand in 1953, and later was manager of a hardware store. He was a Justice of the Peace and a life member of the Plimmerton Volunteer Fire Brigade. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
