Report puzzles cherry exporters

Blenheim reporter Cherry exporters in Blenheim are puzzled over a report yesterday from the New ZealandJapan News Agency which said that New Zealand’s first cherry exports

to Japan had ended in near total failure.

Mr Don Ivory, a director of Marlborough Fruit Producers, Ltd, which owns the country’s largest export cherry packhouse, said that the report was contrary to information from four Japanese importers who took all the supplies of cherries from New Zealand’s two exporters, Turners and Growers, and the N.Z. Fruit Growers’ Federation.

The Importers had said that in the main the cherries had arrived in good condition. Others had been keen to have a share in the distribution of New Zealand cherries, and he could only speculate on the motives behind the report given to the news agency.

The NZJN report said the Japanese retailers must take a big share of the blame for trying to sell cherries for as much as $l5O a kilogram. Mr Ivory said that he was not surprised at that figure.
