Bowler sacked
PA Auckland One of the country’s top bowlers, Danny O’Connor, of Auckland, has lost the job he has held for 17 years for attending the recent national championships in Christchurch. O’Connor confirmed yesterday that when he had served out his notice at the Westfield freezing works, where he has been employed as a quality controller, he would be unemployed. He had gone to Christchurch aware that he could lose his job for taking his annual leave over the Christmas-New Year period, and when he returned earlier this month he had been given a month’s notice. “I’ve got to be fair about it,” he said. “They seemed to be reluctant about it and I had the impression I might have had my job back by saying I wouldn’t do it again.” The Okahu Bay stalwart is one of the few who have won national titles in the three different events, having won four fours championships with Nick Unkovich, a pairs with Rowan Brassey in 1982 and the singles in 1983.
