Two hurt in plane accident
PA Masterton A man and a woman were injured early yesterday when their Wairarapa Aero Club aircraft, a Piper Tomahawk, crashed upside down in a hayfield near Alfredton, north of Masterton. The two people were pulled to safety by a farmer after the crashed plane caught fire. An aero club instructor, Mr Lloyd Anderson, broke his leg in the accident and was taken to Masterton Hospital by ambulance. His student, Ms Jeanette Lambert, suffered a head injury and was flown to the hospital by helicopter. A doctor, flown by helicopter from Masterton, and a police constable from Eketahuna were called to the scene by the farmer who rushed to put out the fire in the wreckage after pulling out the occupants. The plane crashed upside down, the cockpit was squashed and the engine assembly finished up three metres behind the cockpit. Debris was scattered for 20 metres.
People at the scene were uncertain what caused the crash and said the passengers were lucky the plane did not become engulfed by the flames.
