Swift walk by Scatter

Walking events do not always receive the attention they deserve. This was certainly the case at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday when the Edmonton Commonwealth Games representative, Graham Seatter (Old Boys), won the 10km track walk in 42min. 355.

The time was the best ever recorded in New Zealand, by some 345, and yet it went virtually unnoticed. It was a world-class effort, and suggests that Seatter is now in even better form than when he was last at a peak for the Edmonton Games nearly eight years ago.

His time can be put into proper perspective when compared with the winning time of another New Zealander, Murray Day, in the British 10km championship last year. Seatter’s time was a full minute faster.
