Greenpeace plans Ice landing
PA Wellington Greenpeace plans to put people ashore in Antarctica in time for “Antarctica day” on February 1, when its offices round the world . will demonstrate against threats to the continent. The Greenpeace flagship of the same name will then return to Ross Island to look at the possibility of landing non-per-ishable equipment in preparation for the establishment of a base camp in McMurdo Sound next year, the organisation says. Recently Greenpeace announced that ice conditions had prevented the establishment of an Antarctic base this summer. The campaign co-ordl-nator, Mr Pete Wilkinson, said from the ship that
the expedition had not been wasting its time. •The information we have gathered will be invaluable next year,” he said. “There’s still a lot to do and we may even be able to land some of our equipment if conditions permit. Our initial disappointment has been sweetened by the work carried out to date and by the prospect of what we can still achieve." -
The ship reported fine weather, little wind and temperatures down only to minus 3. Dozens of
icebergs and floes were in sight and although they were slowly drifting away from McMurdo Sound, conditions were still suffi-
ciently bad to prevent the ship seeking access, Mr Wilkinson said.
