Status of wildlife changed
PA Wellington The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, has announced changes to the protected status of a number of species of wildlife. Under an Order-in-Council, harrier hawks and black shags become partly protected wildlife. The birds cannot now be hunted or killed by any person unless the birds are causing injury or damage to property on
any land occupied by that person. The feral goose is no longer protected and may now be hunted without further authority. The red-legged partridge has been declared game and may be hunted by any holder of an appropriate licence. The kauri snail, under threat through habitat loss, is now absolutely protected, said Mr Tapsell.
