Women’s canoe squad

PA Wellington A women’s K four canoeing squad, hoping to make the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, has been announced by the New Zealand Canoeing Association. The squad was chosen from training and selection camps held over the last three months, canoeing association selector Russell Hawken said in Auckland.

It would attend the national championships in Auckland next month, with the aim of covering 500 metres in 1.455.

If the time was reached, a European campaign later this year was planned, he said. The ultimate aim was to attend the games in Seoul. New Zealand has never sent a women’s squad to the Olympics before.

The squad of Elizabeth Blencoe (Gisborne), Juli Gimblett (Otaki), Phillipa Nottingham (Auckland) and Cathy Tracey (Otaki), will train in Gisborne for the championships. The two reserves are Denise Higginson (Tauranga) and Trena McFedries (Otaki).
