Bid for top union job
PA Wellington Mr Roger Middlemass, president of the Meat Workers’ Union West Coast (North Island) branch, has said he will run for the union’s national presidency. The current president, Mr Rang! Paenga, has held the post since 1976 and is also the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast
branch president. Both men are touring meatworks covered by the union.
About 40 meetings are to be held among the union’s 24,000 members.
Mr Paenga last year aroused national interest when he joined a union delegation to South Africa against the wishes of the Federation of Labour.
Mr Middlemass said Mr Paenga’s visit to South Africa was not connected with his decision, which had been made before he knew about the visit. Mr Middlemass said he would continue as West Coast branch president if elected to the national office. Secret ballots will be held between February 10 and February 16.
