Greenpeace memorial plans
A memorial to the 111-fated Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior will be built in front of the Northern Wairoa Museum at Dargaville. "Points North,” the magazine of the Northland Harbour Board, reports that the memorial, with the original masts rigged as if they were on the ship, will be erected in a concrete border outline of the vessel.
After lengthy negotiations, the museum has secured a wide range of articles from the Rainbow Warrior.
They include the ship’s clock, which stopped at 10.5 p.m. after the explosions that scuttled her, the captain’s chair from the wheelhouse, port and starboard navigation lights, masthead rigging lights, and assorted blocks and tackle.
Parts of the main engine, telegraph bells and name plates will be included also in the collection. Getting the material to Dargaville posed problems. The 31m main mast, weighing three tonnes, and the 19.8 m mizzen mast, weighing 1.5 tonnes, had to be cut into sections for transportation. ARRIVALS Angeliki (9.53 a.m.), Mexico (Scales).
