Flights leave N.Z. without food, drink
PA Auckland More than 20 aircraft left New Zealand yesterday without being provided with meals and liquor from Air New Zealand kitchens.
A dispute over wages which closed the kitchens at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch meant five Air New Zealand flights left without provisions. It is not known how many of the aircraft of other airlines brought in sufficient provisions for return flights. Kitchen staff, who are members of the Hotel Workers’ Union, want the same pay as ground stewards who load and unload the provisions.
An Air New Zealand spokesman said last evening that the ground stewards, who were members of the Airline Stewards and Hostesses’ Union, had received extra pay for the last 13 years for driving high-lift trucks between
the kitchen and the aircraft.
