Traffic officers seek action

PA Auckland A group of Auckland traffic officers plans to press for day patrols to be doubled and night patrols to carry batons. This comes after the assault on Sunday of a Henderson-based officer whose nose was broken in two places.

Traffic Officer Brent Bowler was thrown against a wall in New Lynn and punched when he stopped a motor-cyclist and his pillion passenger.

The Public Service Association’s Central Auckland traffic officers’ sub-group chairman, Mr Bill Steedman, said a 23 per cent increase in assaults on traffic officers last year was intolerable. “No way are we going to allow it to continue,” he said.

An emergency meeting of officers in the district on Sunday decided to seek reinforced day patrols. They already double up at night in high-risk areas.
