Narrow escape on climb
Greymouth reporter A Mount Cook guide is in a satisfactory Condition in Grey Hospital with arm and shoulder 7 injuries after a narrow, escape from death while climbing the Haast Peak in Westland Park on Saturday afternoon.
Mr BUI Atkinson, the guide, and an Australian, Mr Russell Bryce, were climbing together, joined by a short rope, when a piece of rock or ice 'fell, striking Mr Atkinson on a shoulder. ? .* Mr Atkinson then lost his balance and fell back onto Mr Bryce, who also lost his footing.
Both men then fell about 200 metres until the fall was stopped when the rope tied them round a mound of snow and rock. Another 20 metres, and they would have fallen into a crevasse 30 metres deep, according to Constable lan Price, of Whataroa.
The rope which saved them was buried two metres into the snow and it took the men some time to dig it out. They then went to the Pioneer Hut to give the alarm about 5.30 p.m. Bad weather prevented the rescue of the two until 8.30 p.m. when they were flown to Fox Glacier
Mr Bryce suffered cuts, bruises and a sore back but was not admitted to hospital.
