Govt’s forestry move applauded
PA Wellington The Native Forests Action Council has applauded the Government’s move to release a discussion paper on the future of privately-owned native forests.
The paper, released by the Minister for the Environment, Mr Marshall, contains policy and legislation options for regulating the felling of native forests on private land. It was initiated by the former Minister for the Environment, Dr Shearer.
The council’s president, Miss Gwenny Davis, said that wood chipping and pine planting activities were bringing about extensive and unwise clear felling of native forest remnants.
Northland, Bay of Plenty, East Cape, central North Island, Nelson and Southland were the main areas affected, she said. “Most Western countries have controls which ensure private owners utilise their forests in accordance with regional plans,” Miss Davis said. “These plans ensure that the over-all cutting of forests is regulated at the sustained yield level for the region as a whole and that areas of scenic or ecological importance are protected. “It would be nice to think that a similar system could be used in New Zealand.”
Miss Davis said the proposals would be discussed at a seminar in Tauranga between April 16 and 18.
