Art thief returns painting

NZPA-Reuter Bremen, West Germany A man who stole a painting by nineteenth century German master Carl Spitzweg has returned it to Bremen’s Art Museum after failing to sell it. A museum spokesman said that the man, whose identity was not known, had the picture delivered to the museum director’s home.

The painting, which has an estimated value of about SUSBO,OOO ($157,600), was stolen in October.

The thief had previously demanded money for the return of the painting but this was rejected by the authorities. After apparently failing to find any buyers, he returned it undamaged, the spokesman said.
