Pacer earns $1000 a second
NZPA-AAP Brisbane Ted and Edna Badcock, Queensland poultry farmers, watched their $2500 purchase, Kentucky Bye Bye, collect more than $lOOO a second for her two-minute dash around Albion Park on Saturday night in one of the richest wins jn Australian trotting history. The ice-cool nerves of skilled reinsman, Kevin Thomas, never faultered despite the pressures of the $132,760 including a $125,000 bonus, waiting at the end of the Fosters Sires’ Stakes Triad Final. In just over 120 seconds, Kentucky Bye Bye collected more prize money than the Inter-Dominion winner will receive later this year.
Thomas, a veteran of over 1200 winners, shadowed the co-favourite, Flirtable, from the start and the two great pacers exploded away from their rivals nearing the top of the straight Flirtable was going strongly coming to the turn but it was obvious on the bend that Thomas had kept enough in reserve as Kentucky Bye Bye eased around the leader to make her winning surge. Kentucky Bye Bye’s victory repeated the effort of Joyable which completed the Triad grand-slam last season to collect a $120,000 bonus paid out by Lloyd’s of London. The win lifted Kentucky. Bye Bye’s stake earnings to $194,420 and confirmed the astute judgment of Thomas who selected her for the Badcocks at the Queensland yearling sales.
