Lorfay looks top chance at Addington today
By
G. K. YULE
Lorfay has had a rapid rise to prominence in the intermediate classes in the last few months. He looks set to further his grand record when he contests the Schweppes Mineral Water Pace at Addington Raceway this evening.
The Derek Jonestrained Lordship gelding has had three wins, a second, a third and a seventh from his last six starts, efforts which almost certainly assure him of favouritism in the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s feature race. He had his latest start on January 3 when he led throughout a solidly-run 2600 m in 3min 21.75. He has drawn the favoured No. 3 barrier position, which should assist him to use his splendid frontrunning ability to good purpose.
Gold and Black, another to have drawn reasonably at No. 6, has a splendid
form background, with wins, including a deadheat with Isel, in her last two appearances. She won stylishly last Wednesday and, in spite of the rise in class, looks poised for another bold effort.
Rotary Motor has to overcome a second-line draw, but that might not keep him but of the finish. He went fairly when fourth to Chipaluck over
3200 m last Wednesday and will have to improve very little on that run to figure in the finish. Late Lustre, Motu Jodi, Smarty Pants and Timandra are others capable of adding interest to the finish. Laser Lad, away from racing since November 15 when he finished fifth to Sir Alba in the Sires’ Stakes Final at Addington,
could make a successful reappearance in the Tropicana Pace, the second leg of the double. Laser Lad is being prepared for the rich round of three-year-old races to be decided in the next few months and he will need to make a big run tonight. Fly Boyden Fly, Dream Lustre, and Cintique Lass are others entitled to respect in an open field.
