No Games qualifiers at S.I. meet

By

KEVIN TUTTY

The establishment of 10 new meeting records lifted the South Island swimming championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday above a mediocre level, but the failure of any swimmer to seriously threaten a Commonweatlh Games qualifying standard must have been a disappointment to coaches and swimmers. Several swimmers were seeking places in the Edinburgh Games team, but their times were generally not within range of the Games targets. The swimmers face a difficult task in the next couple of months to try and achieve the standards. The announcement on Saturday that the Games team might have to be reduced because of a lack of finance would not have helped their motivation. This means that even if they do better the difficult qualifying standards at the New Zealand championships in Hamilton in March, or elsewhere, it might not be enough to get them to Edinburgh. Grant Forbes (Canterbury) has already bettered the qualifying time in the 100 m breaststroke, but on Saturday he was looking for a smart time to support his case. But as his race was about to start a 20-minute break was called. By the time the race started his pre-race mental preparation had been shattered, although he still recorded a useful time, lmin 9.415.

Three of the meeting records broken on Saturday were set in 1979, and the swimmers who set the new times were from Canterbury. All are exciting young competitors. Linda Robinson, who was hoping to get near the Games qualifying time in the 400 m individual medley, fell short of her target, but had the satisfaction of setting new records in the girls’ under 16 years 100 m freestyle and the 200 m individual medley. Robinson recorded lmin 2.55 s in the freestyle, breaking the old mark of lmin 3.1 s set by lona Condie in 1979. In the medley she took two-hundredths of a second off the record. Her new time was 2min 31.475.

Phillippa Langrell has thrived since moving to Canterbury from Timaru late last year, and after a successful Canterbury championships last week she added the South Island under 14 years girls’ 100 m butterfly record to her list of successes. Her time of lmin 10.46 s took more than a second off the old time of lmin 11.8 s, set by Anne Condie in 1979.

Dallas Hibbs (Canterbury) was the young star of the Canterbury championships last week, and on Saturday ne added a South Island title to the handful of Canterbury events he captured.

Hibbs won the boys’ under 14 years 100 m butterfly in lmin 7.555. That bettered by 0.45 s the old record set by Alistair Park in 1979.

Duncan Doig (Canterbury) has made encouraging progress in freestyle events in the last year, and he continued that improvement when he set a new mark for the open 400 m freestyle on Saturday. His time of 4min 20.30 s took 6.74 s off the record set by Nicholas Lawn two years ago. It suggested that Doig is also set to make inroads into his personal best 400 m time of 4min 17s.

Andrew Hamilton, one of a crop 'of talented young swimmers from Southland, set a new record in the boys’ under 16 years 200 m individual medley. Hamilton’s time, 2min 22.295, beat the old mark by 1.025. Otago has had a lean period with its swimming in the last few years, but there were indications on Saturday that a strong squad is again being formed in the city. Katie Price is one of the competent youngsters making an impression, and she was rewarded with the record in the under 14 years girls’ 200 m medley. She recorded 2min 37.865. The old record was 2min 38.345.

Jane Collins (Canterbury) was a comfortable winner of the girls’ under 14 years 100 m freestyle, and she set a new record in the process. She took 0.74 s off the old time with a new record of lmin 4.265.

The other two records were set in relays. The Southland men’s 6 x 50m freestyle relay team recorded 2min 43.85 s (old record 2min 44.885). The Canterbury under 14 years mixed medley relay team recorded 2min 15.88 s (2min 16.15). Canterbury was the top province at the championships, finishing with 673 points. Otago had 456, Southland 289, Nelson-Marlborough 104 and Eastern Districts 77. Otago did have the satisfaction of winning the diving, however. It amassed 21 pointe to Canterbury’s 19. Eastern Districts had six. Abbreviations used in the results are Canterbury (C.), Otago (O.), Eastern Districts (E.D.), Southland (S.), NelsonMarlborough (N.M.). MEN Open 200 m freestyle: R.
