Media cover criticised

The sooner the imbalance between news media coverage of women’s and men’s sport was redressed, the better, the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mrs Hercus, said on Saturday, the Press Association reports.

Mrs Hercus, addressing the Australian and New Zealand women’s cricket teams in Christchurch, said there was much women’s sport — “the Saturday representatative games, women participating in sport at all levels” — that did not get the coverage it deserted. A recent study of women’s sport coverage

on television in New Zealand showed that women’s sport received only 13 per cent of the sport’s news time compared with 69 per cent for men.

“The duration of items relating to women’s sport was also shown to be considerably shorter than those for men — 12 per cent against 88 per cent,” Mrs Hercus said.

The imbalance in coverage far exceeded the greater number of men actually involved in sport, she said. Sponsorship for women’s sport was an area which needejl “as much prompting as possible,” she said.
