Mr Goff ‘fairly busy’

PA Auckland The Minister of Housing, Mr Goff, suggested as the most likely candidate for the new conservation portfolio, says he will not be disappointed if he misses out. Fear of the battles between miners and “greenies” was not the reason. It is just that he has plenty on his hands already.

Back from a South Pacific holiday with his

family, Mr Goff surfaced from a batch of letters to say he was “fairly busy at the moment.” Main tasks facing him early this year would be to get the Residential Tenancies Bill through Parliament, and keep the housing market on an even keel instead of the usual bust after the previous year’s boom.

Mr Goff said he had not spoken directly to the Prime Minister, Mr

Lange, about the new portfolio and it had not been discussed by the Cabinet.

Whoever won it would have conservation on top of their present job, and in his case that would be “a mixed blessing.”

“Housing is keeping me pretty busy at the moment. If conservation is not allocated to me, I’m not going to be disappointed,” he said.
