Flight delays strand 1000

More than 1000 Air New Zealand passengers in Christchurch, Wellington, and Sydney found their flights delayed up to 14 hours this week-end because of an engine problem on a Boeing 767. The problem was rectified and the usual flight schedule resumed.

It meant, however, that Air New Zealand had to provide hotel accommodation and meals for most of the 220 passengers from Christchurch, due to leave for Sydney at 6.15 p.m. on Friday. That flight was rescheduled to 8 a.m. on Saturday. Passengers booked on the Saturday 6 p.m. flight to Sydney were given accommodation and meals also as their flight was rescheduled to 6 a.m., Sunday.

The engine problem was detected before takeoff while passengers were still in the departure lounge, said Air New Zealand’s airport services supervisor, Mr Bill Ball, yesterday. The 767 usually arrives in Sydney on Friday evening and returns to Wellington early Saturday morning. It was to have flown from Wellington to Sydney at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday.
