Shipping news Port deserted for picnic
The port at Lyttelton will be deserted today while the waterslders observe the annual Waterslders’ Picnic holiday day. Traditionally this holiday was commemorated with a big picnic for waterslders and their families, but in more recent times, the picnic has been held on a Sunday before Christmas.
This Christmas the picnic was held at the Heathcote Domain with running races, sack races, chocolate wheels and presents for the children. One waterside worker, Ray Fergus, can remember when thousands of waterslders used to go to the picnics in the 19505.
“When it first began it was a day out for the kiddies,” he said. “Not many people had cars, so they used to go in the biggest train they could get.” He was not sure when the picnics began, but reckons at least 2000 people used to go to them in the 19505. Destinations used to include places as far away as Lyttelton and Springston. A Watersiders’ Picnic Day is celebrated by most ports throughout the country.
