Finnish team will visit
PA Wellington A Finnish Parliamentary delegation will visit New Zealand this week. The delegation, led by the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, Dr Erkki Pystynen, will arrive on tomorrow for an unofficial visit from Australia where it is paying an official visit.
Dr Pystynen is accompanied by Mrs Pystynen, six other members of Parliament representing Finland’s largest political parties, the SecretaryGeneral of the Finnish Parliament, Mr Erkki Ketola, and the Secretary for International Affairs, Mr Jaakko Hissa.
In Wellington they will meet the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr O’Flynn, talk to the Speaker, Dr Wall, attend a luncheon given by Dr Wall, and attend a briefing on New Zealand by the Westpac Banking Corporation. They leave on
Thursday. The secretary to the Finnish Consulate-General in Wellington, Miss Fiona Macdonald, said that while the New Zealand Government welcomed the visit it had not extended an official invitation. .
Miss Macdonald said delegation members were “a bit put out” that although the Government wanted to meet them, it did not extend an invitation. There were no ill feelings. A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said the Government was told about the proposed visit in late October or early November. It was then too late to include it in this year’s financial programme as an official visit.
