Yachties battle storm
PA Auckland Panmure Yacht Club members battled a storm on Saturday evening in the Tamaki Estuary to gain control of six drifting boats which threatened moored craft.
One yacht damaged several other boats, and the others broke free from their moorings between 4 p.m and 9 p.m. North-easterlies of 30 to 35 knots, gusting to 50
knots, buffeted Auckland on Saturday.
The yacht club’s secretary, Mrs Lois Graham, said club members put themselves in some danger to rescue the boats and prevent further damage.
An owner, Mr David Thomson, said he found his yacht on waterfront rocks only half an hour after ensuring it was still at its moorings. He and
friends cleared the smashed up remains of the four-metre craft yesterday.
Parts of a grandstand roof at Alexandra Park, Auckland’s trotting track, were ripped off by wind.
The course manager, Mr R. J. Kane, said “something like a whirlwind” had developed under the roof of the Derby Stand and had blown a third of it away.
