Aust. wins school athletics
PA Auckland Australia beat New Zealand by 354 points to 240 in a secondary schools athletics test at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland yesterday.
Three national field event records were set in the contest which was postponed on Saturday because of rain.
Ben Laidler, of Australia, set a New Zealand colts all-comers’ discus record of 58.82 metres. Another colts all-comers’ mark went to Darren Hosking, of Australia, with a long jump of 7.23 m. . An Australian javelin thrower, Fiona Atkinson, aged 16, established a New Zealand junior women’s all-comers’ record of 47.10 m.
Mark Garner, of Australia, was Impressive in the sprints, taking the 100 m in 10.91 s and the 200 m in 21.485. A fellow team member, Troy Bennett, was second in both events.
The 3000 m was won by Martin Holmes, of New Zealand, in Bmin 31.125.
Kris de Jong, of New Zealand, cleared an outstanding 2.13 m in the high jump, transferred indoors as conditions at Mount Smart were not conducive to high-jumping. Sean Carlin, of Australia, won the discuss with 60.96 m and the hammer with 60.80 m. New Zealand victories went to Billy Panaho in the shot put, Gavin Lovegrove in the javelin (76.82 m Sonia Barry in the 3000 m (9m 37.115), and Stuart Duncan in the 110 m hurdles (15.01 s
