Marshall’s battle
PA Dunedin Dunedin’s Brett Marshall overcame atrocious water conditions to win the fifth race in the Steinlager Triathlon series on the Otago Peninsula yesterday. Marshall, aged 25, finished runner-up to Richard Wells in the first four events and won yesterday when the Aucklander did not compete because of injury.
With his main rival absent, Marshall’s battle was with the elements.
The Otago harbour off Macandrew Bay was choppy with white caps half a metre high and the strong southerly wind blowing down the harbour made the swell difficult.
David Garrett, of Dunedin, impressed in only his third triathlon, finishing second and closing the gap to Marshall to 6min 26s on the running leg.
Richard Wilden, of
Dunedin, competing in his second triathlon, was 19 seconds back in third place.
Allison Roe was the first women home in the 75-strong field. She now leads the national series and only has to finish in the first two at Auckland next week-end to clinch the women’s title. Keri Barrett, of Te Anau, was second in the women’s section, twentyninth over-all, and Kathleen McLachlan (Invercargill) was third, fortieth over-all. Results: Open: B. Marshall (Dunedin). 2hr 19min 245, 1; D. Garrett (Dunedin), 2hr 25mln, 2; R. Wilden (Dunedin), 2hr 25min 19s, 3. Veteran men: R. Mitchell (Dunedin), 2hr 33min 12s, 1. Junior men: P. Grant (Chch), 2hr 48min 50s, 1. Women: A. Roe (Auckland), 2hr 28min 425, 1; K. Barrett (Te Anau), 2hr 51min, 2; K. McLachlan (Invercargill), 2hr 59min 7s, 3.
