Canterbury forced to follow on

PA Levin Canterbury was forced to follow on after making only 68 in its first innings in its Shell Trophy cricket match against Central Districts at the Levin Park Domain yesterday. Central Districts’ captain, Richard Hayward, declared their first innings at 282 for 6 after the home team was put in by Canterbury which won the toss. In reply, Canterbury could find no answer to the pace attack of Peter Visser, who took six for 28 off 12 overs, and Gary Robertson who took four for 15 from six. The last nine Canterbury wickets fell for only 12 runs. Forced to follow on, Canterbury faced one over before stumps and was four without loss. The Central Districts first innings total was highlighted by a sparkling 81 by the former New Zealand wicket-keeper, lan Smith. Smith’s Innings lasted 100 minutes and included 12 fours and one five. Smith was eventually out endeavouring to force the pace, caught just short of the boundary by Steve

McNally from the bowling of Vaughan Brown. The opener, Ronnie Hart, contributed a sound 48 and figured in a partnership of 65 with Tony Blain after Central Districts had lost two wickets for 15 runs. Blain batted well for 33. Hayward returned to form with a fine 69 not out which included some magnificent strokes. Derek Stirling was also in form, compiling 29 in quick time. His innings included five fours. The Canterbury pace attack of Craig Thiele, Sean Tracy and Steven McNally looked good in the early stages of the Central Districts innings but deteriorated. Thiele, who did some great work in the field, had the figures of two for 24 after 12 overs but finished with two for 67 off 19 overs. CENTRAL DISTRICTS First innings R. Hart std Hart b Stead. 48 J.
