Riccarton pair close to quinella
By J. J. BOYLE Close to the end the Pinehaven Handicap at Trentham looked a deadset quinella for the Riccarton pair, The Thief and Firetint. On the Town, came wider on the track to upset those hopes, but not strongly enough to beat The Thief for first.
A Mosgiel-owned Brigand filly having only her fifth start, The Thief was taken north with the New Zealand Oaks her primary objective but she failed to get off the emergency list for the classic.
Her trainer, Dave Kerr, was able to secure the services of the Takanui jockey, Grant Cooksley, again for the filly on Saturday.
Kerr had some re-
servations about the long striding filly’s ability to adapt to a shifting track, but The Thief was equal to the occasion.
Firetint, a member of Bevan Laming’s Riccarton team also having her only start at the meeting, was given the run of the race by Chris Johnson. The four-year-old appeared to be well behind the bit on the turn near the 800 m, but rallied to run up close to the heels of those in the leading line, and struck the front early in the run home.
Although unable to match the first two for finishing speed, Firetint was in no danger of losing third. There was a gap of five lengths to the fourth horse, Beau’s Pride.
