Plans to drop mural opposed
PA Auckland The National Art Gallery’s chairman, Mr Hamish Keith, has opposed the proposal that a 40-metre mural at the Auckland Airport international terminal be removed.
He said he had sent telegrams saying that to the Minister of Customs, Mrs Shields, and the Minister of Arts, Mr Tapsell. Mr Keith was responding to a report that the regional air facilitation committee has asked the Auckland Regional Authority’s passenger services board to have the mural removed.
The inter-departmental committee — which is concerned with passenger flows —• believes the mural may anger tired passengers.
The work was painted by the head of the painting department and acting dean of the Elam School of Fine Arts, Professor Robert Ellis, whose recent works have sold for up to $6OOO each. Mr Keith, who commissioned the mural while he was chairman of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, said it was one of the few big public works of art in the country.
He said it told visitors something about ourselves, and to remove it because of a specious argument was a risky business.
If people queued in the Sistine Chapel and were interviewed later by a uniformed official they would probably complain about Michelangelo.
