Cabinet to hear flood report

PA Nelson The Ministers of Civil Defence, and Works and Development, Messrs Tapsell and Colman, will report to the Cabinet today on the flood damage in Nelson.

They spent more than four hours touring the city, Waimea Plains, and surrounding valleys. Accompanied by the members of Parliament for Nelson and Tasman, Messrs Phillip Woolaston, and Ken Shirley, and local government representatives, they travelled by four-wheel drive vehicles and a helicopter. At a debriefing session in Brightwater township from which 100 people were evacuated on Saturday, the Ministers agreed that the province had been lucky to escape far more serious damage when further heavy rain did not eventuate on Saturday evening.

Mr Colman said the National Roads Board was well geared to provide funds for work on flooddamaged roads. Concerning damage to the Maitai dam which is being built to provide most of Nelson’s water supply, Mr Colman said the Government "comes to the party with subsidies for water supply schemes.” The extent of damage to the earthworks has yet to be fully investigated. “Fund-sharing could be a logical outcome if required,” Mr Colman said.
