1980 escaper sentenced
A man who, almost six years ago, escaped from Rolleston Prison and stowed away on a ship to Australia, yesterday had three months added to his existing term of imprisonment. Paul Frank Thomson, aged 33, an unemployed rigger (Mr A. M. Mclntosh) admitted the offences in the District Court before Judge Pater-
son. Detective-Sergeant M. A. Roswell said that in December, 1979, Thomson was sent to prison for two years and a half on charges of burglary and forgery. The defendant was transferred from Invercargill to Rolleston and on the night of February 23, after serving two months in prison, he escaped.
In April, 1980, Thomson, using another name, stowed away on board the ship Waitaki at Auckland, and it sailed for Sydney. Sergeant Roswell said that the defendant came to the notice of the police in Victoria and he was deported. Mr Mclntosh said that his client was currently serving the unexpired portion of his original prison sentence.
There were no aggravating factors to the escape. Since that time Thomson had been on the run from the police. He was not due to be released from prison until mid-1987, said Mr Mclntosh. On the stowaway offence the Judge sentenced Thomson to seven days in prison, but to be concurrent with his present prison sentence.
