The main role of the appraisal archivist is to assist the Director of national Archives in carrying out that portion of the Archives’ Act 1957 which relates to the disposal of public records. The act requires public records worthy of permanent preservation to be identified and transferred to the custody of National Archives and the remainder to be destroyed by the Director’s authorisation.
Specifically, the appraisal archivist will be responsible for organising, supervising and training staff engaged in appraisal; developing and maintaining effective appraisal and disposal procedures; carrying out appraisal assignments and advising on record management.
