■ J I —J INTERNATIONAL J FZJ DEVELOPMENT FJ ■ COOPERATION NEW ZEALAND - SOLOMON ISLANDS Automotive Engineering Trade Training Officers Applications are invited for the above position which will be funded under New Zealand's Programme of Official Development Assistance. The position is for two years, located at Honiara, Solomon Islands. The successful applicant will be required to take up the appointment in May 1986. The two training officers will be required to set up and operate a training school in the mechanical branch of the Solomon Islands Ministry of Transport, Works and Utilities. The applicants should have a wide experience in all phases of the repair and maintenance of light and heavy vehicles, light construction plant and the use of machine tools, welding and fabrication work. They will also require experience in trade training. Their responsibilities will include the training of local trade trainees as welj as local supervisors, mechanics and apprentices. Subjects that are expected to be taught in the school include maintenance of both petrol and diesel powered vehicles and plant items covering all fields such as power units, transmissions, fuel injection equipment, workshop and staff management. The training school will consist of a component rebuild shop and a training classroom. Training will be given by working on current equipment selected from the main workshop to give practical work experience to complement the local technical school training. Terms and conditions of appointment are set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and salary is based on existing salary paid. Airfares, transfer costs and allowances will be paid. A recent major review of future data/information processing requirements has resulted in the purchase of a Burroughs A3F mainframe into which the existing Burroughs 896 manufacturing/production systems will be interfaced. Duties will involve new project and development work utilising LINC II in addition to re-writing all existing systems including the major parts and distribution network. It is envisaged that the existing IBM 4331 mainframe will be phased out in February LINC training will be provided for the appointee who will have had three years or more programming experience at a commercial site. Ideally LINC or a knowledge of 4th Generation M Software techniques is desirable; however, strong technical skills the ability to translate user needs into effective systems is the primary prerequisite.
