AUSTRALIA Investors take profits
PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier, with profit-tak-ing in leading stocks and bearish sentiment pushing the market down, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had fallen 7.0 points to 1052.9, the all industrials index 4.3 points to 1561.0 and the .all resources index 8.7 points to 661.0. The gold index dropped 15.0 points to 958.6. Turnover was 45.4 M shares worth $80.6M, with falls outnumbering rises by 251 to 189. BHP reflected market sentiment, closing 18c down at 874 after reaching a low of 870 in strong turnover. Among other market leaders, CSR remained steady on 365 and Bell Resources lost 4c to 616. The mining sector continued to trade easier, with declines leading advances by 91 to 47. CRA shed 6c to 574, MIM 7c to 298, Peko Wailsend 10c to 554 and Western Mining 5c to '360.
North Broken Hill, under a partial take-over bid by lEL, was keenly sought and about 2M shares were exchanged before closing 3c down at 272. Gold stocks also traded easier with whim creek dropping 15c to 235, Emperor 15c to 360 and Central Norseman 10c to 710. In the oil and gas sector Santos traded heavily and closed 6c up at 530 while Magellan shed 3c to 215 and Ampol Exploration 5c to 230. On the Industrial board lEL lost 16c to 718, while Brierley Investments dropped 4c to 516. About 830,000 Pioneer Concrete shares were crossed and the share price remained steady on 270. Elsewhere, FAI fell 26c to 600, the Bell Group 10c to 720, Bond Corp 7c to 213 and ANI 3c to 302. On the plus side, TNT improved 3c to 283, Boral 2c to 332 and Cereus 20c to 1000. Major banking stocks traded easier, with the ANZ off 5c to 455, Westpac 4c to 451 and the National Australia bank 3c to 462.
