Peace movements
Sir,—You have maligned the peace movements in many countries by implying they are manipulated by the Soviet Union (“The Press,” January 20). You also imply that opposition to the
United States “star wars” systems (5.D.1.) is mainly from the Soviet side. In fact, scientists and defence experts everywhere believe S.D.L will lead to an enormous leap in the arms race, bringing the world ever closer to self-extermination and making reversal of the arms race much' more difficult. Why do you imply that it is mainly the Soviets who are worried about such developments? There are over 300 autonomous peace groups in New Zealand, each one deciding on its own policies. Peace will only come to the world through the strong demands of popular grass roots movements — something which some Governments (East and West) attempt to discredit and suppress. — Yours, etc., LARRY ROSS, Secretary, N.Z. Nuclear-Free Zone Committee. January 21, 1986.
