Society to fight gondola project

The Summit Road Society has decided to oppose the gondola project planned to be built on the Port Hills behind Heathcote Valley. The gondola, details of which were announced last month, would climb a spur alongside the Bridle Path, cross over the . Summit Road, and end on the summit of Mount Cavendish.:

The president of the society, Mr J. W. Jameson, said his committee had considered the proposal and had decided to oppose it. “We are of the opinion that the desecration of the Mount Cavendish scenic reserve, the Impact of the

gondola on traffic, and the changes it would cause to the environment of Heathcote Valley and the Bridle Path would be too big a price to pay for this type of commercial venture,” said Mr Jameson.

“We are also gravely concerned that it would set a precedent, that would “make it difficult to resist further applications for other development on the Port Hills,” he said. Local residents and other interested parties will meet representatives of the company involved in the project at a public meeting in the Heathcote Community Centre on Tuesday, evening.
